Beyond the glitz and glamour of the 5* all inclusive resorts and the posh stores on 5th avenue, Mexico remains a developing country in need of education and lacking in resources.
Here is a short list of a few local charities that help Playa del Carmen and the surrounding areas.
Which one will you help?
Until recently, the Cristo Rey community, located about 30 minutes outside Playa del Carmen did not have a local school.
The K'iin Beh school provides bilingual education to kids starting from kindergarten through until grade 6.
Not only are money donations needed, but there is a constant need for school supplies, construction materials, and volunteers.
Do you want to work in Playa del Carmen? English teachers are always needed.
You can see their Facebook page or website for more info.
Want to donate but can't make it out to Cristo Rey? Any donations are welcome and PlayaDelCarmen.com can pick up in the Playa del Carmen area or you can drop off at our office and we will gladly bring it to the school.
This volunteer run association works at improving the conditions for the dogs at CEBIAM, the Playa del Carmen Pound. Once dogs are picked up from the streets or surrendered by the owners, they have 30 days before being euthanized. Also, the city provides no funding for feeding the dogs or maintaining the facilities.
Save a Death Row Dog makes sure that every dog is published on their facebook page giving them a better chance at adoption both locally and internationally. They also help by collecting food, cleaning products and other needed supplies like medicine.
Most of all, this association works in conjunction with several rescue associations in Canada to get the dogs out of the pound and into foster homes where they are fully vetted and then flown to their forever homes abroad.
You can help by donating, escorting an animal (very easy to do at no cost to you, just contact us for info) or volunteering your time.
Coco’s is a non-profit organization that offers low-cost spay/neuter surgeries and basic healthcare to those on a low income for both cats and dogs.
They also have a trap/spay/neuter program in place for the stray animals in the area. They have a program to help the street dogs and the rescue organizations.
They have an ongoing wishlist of supplies so they are able to keep these amazing services available. With close to 20,000 spay and neuter surgeries under their belt, they have made an incredible difference in Playa del Carmen.
Want to help in a non-monetary way? How about escorting a dog / cat back to the US or Canada? You are met in Cancun and upon arrival in your home country. Help an animal get to their family. This does not cost you a cent and makes a HUGE difference. Please contact us for more information.
ViDAS, Veterinarios Internacionales Dedicados a Animales Sanos, (International Veterinarians Dedicated to Animal Health) is a group comprised of Veterinary students, Veterinarians and other animal – loving volunteers. Each year they travel to the province of Quintana Roo, Mexico providing free veterinary care in an effort to fight pet overpopulation.
They are working together with the local community to make a difference that affects not only the animals, but the people. ViDAS has long term goals of traveling throughout Latin America and other countries throughout the world in an effort to educate about and prevent pet overpopulation.

This organization is dedicated to helping the less fortunate kids in the Playa del Carmen area receive well-needed school supplies as many families cannot afford even the most basic school supplies. They also commit to providing the kids with English language lessons. In this area, where so many employment opportunities require English, this is an essential skill for the kids to have.
This is a volunteer-based initiative and relies on your donations. You can donate via the KKIS website or consider packing some needed school supplies and bringing them down.
This association has several different programs: marine turtle conservation, a green areas program and the conservation of local cultures. They also run Parque La Ceiba, a local park that offers various programs to community, environment-awareness, cultural expositions, a recycling area and a program to grow plants and trees.
Their efforts have resulted in the protection of more than 200,000 turtles annually, more than 400,000 trees per year, as well as the thousands of locals that have had the opportunity to visit La Ceiba Park and learn more about the environment in the process. You could always donate to this worthy cause.
