Playacar

Playacar is an upscale residential and resort area just south of Playa del Carmen. While it is still part of the city, Playacar has its own unique feel and identity.

The gated community is divided into two main areas: Playacar Phase 1, which is close to downtown and 5th Avenue Playa del Carmen, and Playacar Phase II, which is where you'll find the Hard Rock Golf Course and most of the zone's major hotels. The area boasts secluded beaches, some of the most luxurious beachfront houses and villas in Playa del Carmen, and a few select hotels. The second, Playacar Phase II, is more of a typical residential area, and the beachfront is mostly occupied by the resorts. The houses and condominiums are strung together around the Hard Riviera Maya Golf Course, which snakes throughout Playacar creating islands of green fairways throughout the area.

While there's not a lot to see and do within Playacar itself, there are several quality hotels and restaurants, plus there's a nice aviary and it's a great place to go for a walk or jog.

HOW TO GET TO PLAYACAR
The main entrance to Playacar is at the end of 10th Street heading south. You'll need to make sure you have an ID on you if you go, as the security guards at the gate will ask you who or what you will be doing there. Taxis are available, but can cost anywhere from 90 pesos and up, depending on your location and the scruples of your taxi driver. Learn about tips and tricks for taking Playa del Carmen taxis here.

THINGS TO DO IN PLAYACAR

As mentioned above, as a residential area Playacar isn't known for having a bustling Fifth Avenue or a slew of all-night discos. Nevertheless, you can have a nice time in Playacar by playing a round of golf at the Hard Rock Golf Course, going for a stroll down the tranquil streets, visit the local Mayan ruins (yes, there are Mayan ruins in Playacar, small, but ruins all the same), check out the Xaman Ha aviary or go for a drink and some live music at the Public House. Also, there's a local organic market every Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at El Arbol Playacar.

WHERE TO EAT IN PLAYACAR
Luckily for the foodies looking for a bite to eat, the restaurants in Playacar don't disappoint. From Argentinian empanadas and pizzas at Don Pepperonis and its next door neighbor Latino's restaurant to the fresh-made pasta and salads at ITALIANO in the Playacar Plaza close to the highway, you'll be well served. And if you have an appetite for some other type of food, Playa del Carmen's 5th Avenue is just a short walk away.
