Cenote Diving

The subterranean sinkhole system in the Riviera Maya is becoming a must for any scuba diver visiting the Playa del Carmen area.

These caverns fill with freshwater that has seeped through the limestone ledge and the result is often very clear, fresh water with very little particle matter.

The underground caves in the Riviera Maya attract divers from around the world to explore the miles of waters with impressive stalactites as well as the halocline effect which occurs when the salt water meets the fresh water. 

Some of the bucket list cenote dives are:

Gran Cenote Island - Part of the Sac-Actun cenote system, popular with snorkelers, too. Dive below the lily pad surface to the seemingly endless chambres and passageways. 

Dos Ojos - The deepest and among the longest of the Yucatan's cave networks.The main cavern is huge, so no claustrophobia at all despite the cenote dive.

Car Wash - It looks a little muddy on the surface but the water is sapphire colored in the winter or emerald in the summer and early fall.

Chac-Mool - This cenote has a large entrance and the halocline is in relatively shallow water, at around 30 feet.

Calavera - Hidden down a jungle path there are 3 holes, known as the skull or calavera, You will experience the halocline at approximately 50 feet.

Ocean Diving

There is spectacular diving in the Riviera Maya both off the shore in Playa del Carmen and also in Cozumel. Every level of diver can find something interesting and can choose between reef diving, wreck diving and wall diving. 

Considering this area has the second longest reef in the world, the Meso-American Barrier Reef System running the length of the Riviera Maya and Cancun areas, you will not be short of dive spots. The Reef system is home to over 65 species of stony coral, over 350 species of mollusk and 500 species of fish. You're also likely to see stingrays, sea turtles, nurse sharks and lobsters. 

Wreck diving is possible in a few different locations. Choose the wreck in Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos or from 2 different wrecks in Cancun. 

Wall diving in Cozumel is world famous. Cozumel is located just a few minutes from Playa del Carmen and offers multiple dive sites that include Santa Rosa, Palancar, Paraíso, Punta Sur, Yucab, Cordona and Maracaibo.

Also make sure to dive the Pared Verde (the Green Wall), the signature Playa del Carmen wall dive.

The underwater museum just off the shore between Cancun and Isla Mujeres attracts thousands of divers. The idea is to submerge life sized statues creating an artificial reef area where coral reef could grow and to encourage marine life. 

Whale shark dives are available from May through September off the coast of Isla Holbox and Isla Mujeres. One of the only places in the world where you can dive with whale sharks!
