It's only fitting that in this eclectic mix of wonderful bakeries in Playa del Carmen that we include La Pastelería. Not only is this café/restaurant/bakery more than worthy of being considered among the best, it's the only Mexican bakery to make the list. In a land whose culinary identity is so based on corn and its multiple uses in the kitchen, bread has not reached the same exalted platform as maiz in this region. However, La Pastelería bakes a wonderful tribute to the diversity and richness of Mexican pastries, serving up baked goods that are as delicious as they are high quality.

The Grumpy Bakers

Roving bakers who go from market to market

Don't let the name of this talented team of bakers fool you. Though grumpy may be a part of their moniker, the only thing that goes into these delicious baked treats are lots of tender lovin'. And probably gobs of butter. Actually, these grumps shouldn't even be on this page seeing as they don't even have their own bakery, but they can be found each Tuesday at the Kava Kasa market from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Plus, what better way to turn that frown upside down than with some sea salt chocolate chip cookies, cronuts made fresh at the table, dakota bread, and cheddar herb scones!
